Lord Phillip Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield (1694-1773), an admired orator, statesman and author is generally credited with commissioning the eponymous sofa style. It is alleged that the original commission specified a seat on which a gentleman could sit upright and in comfort without wrinkling garments.
